why do prunes make you poop
We know that prunes are used for transit. But more generally, what is the point of eating prunes?
Culturally and historically, prunes have the reputation of being good for transit. As the saying goes, “a prune is not enough, two prunes are fine, three prunes are too much.” Why ? Because the prune has 3 elements that will participate in the intestinal transit: fiber, stimulating the transit, potassium, a little diuretic, which reinforces the work of fiber and sorbitol, a “sugar-alcohol” which is fermented by the flora intestinal, which causes some flatulence conducive to transit when they are not too abundant ….
But they can also make “stomach ache” by swelling the colon. That’s why “too much prune” is “too much.”
Studies have shown that prunes help fight cancer or prevent diabetes or obesity. What diseases do they contribute to fighting? How?
The prune is known to work the intestinal transit and solve problems of constipation. But not much more: to lend him other well-defined benefits is wrong.
Transit side, it is perfect because it solves the problems of constipation that occur especially to hospitalized patients for short or medium stays, or in stressed subjects, or who take sedative medications because they act as a transit retarder. They often induce chronic constipation. Two prunes and water are sovereign to regain a transit.
Nevertheless, the fibers of which the prune is rich have beneficial effects on the lipid and carbohydrate metabolisms: these fibers make it possible to eliminate a little lousy cholesterol, they regulate the metabolism of the carbohydrates – the glycemia … but nothing miraculous.
Why are they so bad press? Especially in women?
The prune, taken too much, can induce fermentations that are painful: now, women often have irritable bowel syndrome and over-react to this type of food. So they fear the consumption of prune: you should know that they could benefit from eating one or two prunes, including dinner, accompanied by water. Ideal to find a regular transit the next day, without another unpleasant effect.
What should be combined to make the effects more effective?
You can use prune with applesauce: the mixture is softer and more respectful of your gut. Associated in a traditionally heavy recipe such as a dish of pork, stuff, and apples can increase the rate of fiber and facilitate transit that could be slowed by too much fat.
Against constipation, water and prunes!
If it is rarely severe, it is often frankly painful. But constipation is not inevitable! With some good habits and in the absence of any pathology, you should find an ideal transit.
Bellyache, feeling of heaviness in the abdomen and, above all, being unable to go for a bowel movement for several days or even weeks (yes, yes!): These are the painful symptoms of constipation. Acute or chronic, it poisons its victims on a daily basis. A vicious circle since it is often in this everyday life that the causes of constipation are: poor diet, insufficient hydration, excessive intake of certain drugs are among the most common reasons for this condition. Decisive point: these are easy things to change.
First of all, are you sure that this constipation does not have a particular cause? Thus, some medications can make the stool much harder. Just then your doctor prescribes another treatment, equivalent but without this side effect, so that everything is in order. Stress is also a common cause of constipation: considering your day calmly is undoubtedly a factor of good transit. It is not always easy to put your concerns into perspective: do not hesitate to call in a specialist if your stress is clogging you up on a daily basis.
First good habit to take: drink water in quantity. 1.5 L to 2 L per day, minimum. Constipation is mainly caused by the fact that the stool is not moist enough and therefore progress poorly in the intestine. By drinking a lot, you have a good chance of evacuating the problem … The idea is to start with a large glass of water, in the morning on an empty stomach.
The water is retained in the stool thanks to the fibers … Morality: it is thus also necessary to throw oneself on the fibers! That is found in large quantities in fruits and vegetables (five a day, do not forget!) But also in some cereals, including wheat bran or flax. You can consume them in almost crude form (powdered for example), but perhaps you prefer the boxes of cereals whose many television commercials boast every day the merits. However, be careful not to overconsumption: it could reduce the assimilation of vitamins and nutrients necessary for your good shape. If in doubt, do not hesitate to consult a specialist who will prescribe a plan adapted to your case.
Other foods are also known for their laxative effects. This is, for example, the case of honey or famous prunes, Agen or elsewhere. Do not deprive yourself, plus it’s good!
If despite our imprecations you still have not put yourself, here is an additional reason to put on your sneakers: the physical activity facilitates the transit! The movement and strengthening of the muscles, particularly at the visceral level, promotes the evacuation of stool.
Another habit of life that can help you: have a regular lifestyle, especially at the level of meals. Similarly, force yourself to go to the bathroom every day at the same time, for example just after breakfast. The idea is not to hold back and to rush to the toilet as soon as you feel the urge to go to the saddle.
Nothing works? Laxative drugs will surely help you relieve. Ask a health professional for advice before using them and do not overuse them: they could have the opposite effect or become addictive.
If despite this health program your worries persist, you will need to consult a doctor to verify that you do not suffer from a digestive pathology. Do not panic: you will quickly find your lightness and good mood!
