What is Dulcolax for?

Dulcolax is used for the relief of occasional constipation. Under medical supervision, Dulcolax is also used to empty the intestines before and after surgery and before specific tests.

When should not Dulcolax be used :

  • If you have severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting.
  • If you have a bowel obstruction (ileus), acute inflammatory bowel disease or appendicitis.
  • If you suffer from severe dehydration.
  • If you have an allergy to the drug or any ingredient in the product (see the non-medicinal ingredients).

Warnings and precautions:

BEFORE you use Dulcolax, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you have abdominal pain, stomach cramps, fever, nausea or vomiting.
  • If you are pregnant
  • If you took Dulcolax for one week without seeing any effect.
  • If you are taking any other medicines, including over-the-counter medications, herbs, and alternative medicines.

You should not take laxative within two (2) hours of receiving another medicine as the effect of the other drug may be lessened.

You may feel dizzy or faint (syncope) due to discomfort caused by abdominal spasms. In case of abdominal contractions, please avoid dangerous tasks such as driving a car or operating machinery.

Overdose:

If high doses are given, loose stools (diarrhea), abdominal cramps and loss of potassium and other minerals may occur. Chronic overdose with Dulcolax may cause chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, kidney damage and muscle weakness.

  • Remove the suppository from its aluminum packaging.
  • Immerse the tip of the suppository in warm water for a few seconds to soften the outside.
  • Lie down on the side and bring the opposite knee to the chest.
  • Relax the gluteus before introducing the suppository to facilitate insertion.
  • Gently insert the lubricated suppository into the rectum through the tip-shaped end first.
  • Push the flat end of the suppository to the side to make sure part of the suppository is in contact with the rectum wall.
